Did you know that traditional Thai massage therapists – like physiotherapists do too – advice their clients to practice some positions at home to increase their recovery after injury?

These positions have many benefits, such as relief of a headache, scapular pain, arm stiffness, shoulder stiffness, hip discomfort, knee discomfort, neck pain and many more.

The practice is called Rue-si Dat Ton, also sometimes spelled as Rue-si Dutton or Rue si datton and is also called Thai Yoga.

Self-stretching

Rue-si Dat Ton Traditional Thai Yoga is not well-known in the west, but in Thailand, this type of yoga is practiced to prevent illnesses and treat ailments in their early stages. Rue-si Dat Ton means “Hermit’s Self-Stretching Exercise”. This yoga-style practice was developed by religious hermits in Thailand many centuries ago. Unlike traditional Thai massage, you don’t need to have any masseur to massage you, you can do these stretches yourself alone wherever you like.

Health Practice

Originally designed to restore energy, flexibility, and vitality after long periods of meditation retreat, Rue-si Dat Ton has since become an integral part of traditional Thai health practices. Traditional Thai massage therapists advice their clients to practice certain positions at home to speed up the recovery process.

Thai yoga in parks

However, you can also follow the whole sequence of positions, like any yoga practice. This is what many Thai are doing, they integrate Rue-si Dat Ton in the daily practice of their health routines. When you look around early mornings you will see many people practicing Rue-si Dat Ton in parks in Thailand.

Different yoga

Rue-si Dat Ton is regarded as more gentle and accessible than many forms of yoga taught. Consequently, it can be practiced by all age groups and all levels of ability. With every posture, you inhale and exhale as directed by the teacher, and then hold your breath for a few moments. Each posture may be repeated 3-5 times on each side.

Benefits

Benefits of Rue-si Dat Ton include: relief wrist trouble, relief hand and feet discomfort, relief of arm stiffness, relief of knee discomfort, relief of tension headache, relief of scapular pain, relief of shoulder stiffness, relief of hip discomfort, relief of chest compression, relief of stiffness and pain in the shoulder, relief of neck discomfort, relief of leg stiffness, also… improving the breath, improving flexibility, improving your balance. Improving muscle tone. Improve blood circulation, meditation, improve muscle strength and body balance, increase the range of motion, and reduce muscle tension.

Origin

Rue-si Dat Ton was introduced many centuries ago by hermits, practitioners of ancient arts and sciences living in the forest. Years later much of the traditional Thai culture has been destroyed. In 1778 King Rama I ordered to collect all the knowledge about Thai medicine. He created a new capital city, as we know as Bangkok. Here he renovated the old temple Wat Po to become the site of a new Royal temple. As part of the project, medical texts from across the kingdom were collected and brought to be stored at Wat Po. The King also ordered the creation of a set of clay Rue-si statues to provide this knowledge for the general benefit.

Statues in Wat Po temple

Since the statues were made of clay, most of them collapsed or lost their shape in the rain. During Rama III (around 1836) 82 Rue-Si Datton statues were renovated. After completion, the statues were placed in the pavilion in Wat Po and poems to explain the benefit of every position were inscribed under each statue.

Benefits by poems

The poems were created by about 35 people, including King Rama III himself, some lords, monks, and others. Also, medical texts were inscribed into marble tablets. Medical theories regarding the origin and treatment of disease, massage charts, and over 1000 herbal formulas were all recorded on the marble tablets. Gardens of medicinal herbs were also planted on the temple grounds.

Open medical university

So Wat Po could become an open university of traditional Thai culture. Over the years most of these Rue-si Datton statues have vanished, but in 2009 the Public Health Ministry’s Department for Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) sculpted the same 80 Rue-si Dat Ton statues, this time in metal, to promote the art of traditional Thai healing. So now everyone can see them again!

At this very moment, someone in the world is breaking his or her bone.

Crack… ough!

Every 3 seconds…

Because every 3 seconds someone in the world has a fracture.

A hip, arm or spine breaks

Every 3 seconds someone in the world is breaking his or her hip, arm or spine. Or any other bone in the body.

This is due to osteoporosis.

Due to the fact, we become older.

When we become older our bones become weaker.

We cannot do anything about that.

Or…

can we?

Yes, we can prevent this

This new study of astronauts can help prevent diseases related to bones, like osteoporosis.

What is osteoporosis?

But first, what is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis stands for ‘porous bone’. It is a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both.

Same risk as heart disease

Therefore it is easy to break your hip, spine or arm. Did you know that the combined lifetime risk for hip, forearm and spine fractures coming to clinical attention is around 40%? This is the same rate as the risk for heart disease!

Your chance to osteoporosis

So how high are my chances?

Here are some facts from the International Osteoporosis Foundation.

Worldwide osteoporosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually. This results in an osteoporotic fracture every 3 seconds!

One out of 3 women and 5 men

Worldwide 1 in 3 women over age 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures. As will 1 in 5 men aged over 50.

Risk Increases

So as we become older the risk of osteoporosis increases. However, everyone is different and some people are more prone to osteoporosis than others.

How so?

This study of astronauts can help us understand how bone-loss works.

Astronauts lose bone mass fast

According to NASA, astronauts who spend many months on a space mission can lose, on average, 1 to 2 percent of bone mass each month.

They usually experience bone loss in the lower halves of their body, particularly in the bones of the spine and legs.

Losing 10 percent of bone

The femoral bone of an astronaut in space loses 1.5 percent of its mass per month. The femoral bone is located in the thigh. This bone is the longest bone in our body and supposed to be the strongest bone in our body. However, an astronaut loses approximately even 10 percent of its bone mass during a six-month stay in space.

Regaining is difficult

It is quicker to lose bone mass than to regain it. Because the recovery time after returning to earth takes at least three or four years, states NASA.

Another risk

Plus the loss of bone mass also triggers an increase in the levels of calcium in the blood, which increases the risk of kidney stones.

Why do they lose it?

So why do astronauts lose so much bone mass?

The reason lies in the fact that astronauts don’t experience gravity in space. They are floating. Their movements are slow, their muscles don’t need to work hard, and their bones don’t need to work with gravity as we have here on earth.

Lack of movement

According to Dr. Smith Johnston (medical officer and flight surgeon at NASA), living in the microgravity environment of space means “to be floating 92 percent of the time, since only 8 percent of the time is engaged in intense exercise and gravitational forces are experienced.” This supposes, assures an “important bone and muscular wear, accelerated aging of the bones, which lose their function of “holding” the rest of the body.” Despite the intensive exercise carried out by some of the astronauts and cosmonauts of NASA. “the loss of bone density is still very significant and it is important to stop it.”

Are you living like an astronaut?

You probably think, well I am not an astronaut, so what has that to do with me? However, living in space is a good example of what happens in the bone tissue of a sedentary person who does not perform any physical exercise.

Laying in bed?

Researchers learned when studying the impact of space travel on bones is relevant for patients who are bedridden. If you are motionless in bed for long periods of time, you experience rapid and progressive bone loss. When you do not at all exercise the muscles, that give strength to the skeleton through movement, you will lose bone density.

Lack of exercise?

You don’t have to be a bedridden patient to lose bone mass. Even studies in healthy volunteers and young people who do not exercise for long periods of time have shown that completely immobilized bones can lose up to 15 percent of the mineral density in a period of three months!

How to prevent osteoporosis?

So what to do when you don’t want to degenerate your muscles – you don’t want to lose it?

You can either do exercise or get a massage. Deep acupressure and stretching massage has the same benefits as doing exercise. However, there are some side effects of doing too much exercise. Exercise is amazing if you do it with care, so you don’t harm your body. So please, do exercise even walking is already great to use muscles and prevent bone loss. And combine exercise with massage to recover faster from the exercise.

Decrease fractures worldwide?

So, hope you are now more aware of the fact that moving is important for your health now and in the future. If we change our habit and move more, we might be able to help to decrease the number of fractures due to osteoporosis worldwide.

Create a healthy day and move!

We all know what eating healthy and getting enough sleep can do for your immune system. But did you know that massage treatments improve your immune system? In this article, we will explain to you how massage improves the immune system.

What is the immune system?

Before we show you how massage improves the immune system, let’s first talk about what the immune system actually is. When we are talking about the immune system, we talk about the system that is most involved in the capacity to fight against bacteria and diseases. This is the lymphatic system. A system of thin tubes and lymph nodes that run throughout our body. These tubes are called lymph vessels or lymphatic vessels.

Fighting against bacteria

The lymphatic system contains the immune cells – macrophages and cells group B and group T lymphocytes. Those cells are called white blood cells. And they are important when you have a virus or a bacteria inside of your body, like if you have a cold. Because these are the cells that fight against those viruses and bacteria.

The lymphatic system

Before we explain how massage improves the immune system, we need to have a bit of knowledge of anatomy. So let’s take a minute to find out how our body works…

We can consider the lymphatic system as a kind of shadow of the circulatory system. The lymph vessels branch through all parts of the body like the arteries and veins from the circulatory system that carries blood. However, the lymphatic system tubes are much finer and carry a colorless liquid called lymph.

So how does it work?

Well, as the blood circulates around the body, fluid leaks out from the blood vessels into the body tissues. This fluid carries nutrients to the cells. Plus it bathes the body tissues to form tissue fluid. The fluid then collects waste products, bacteria, and damaged cells. After the collection of waste, the fluid drains into the lymph vessels.

Filtering out bacteria

From the lymph vessels, the fluid, which now is called lymph, flows into the lymph glands. These lymph glands then filter out any bacteria and damaged cells.

From the lymph glands, the lymph moves into larger lymphatic vessels. Then the lymph follows its journey to the base of the neck (called the thoracic duct). And last but not least, this thoracic duct then empties the lymph back into the blood circulation. And the process starts all over.

Clean lymph

Because of all this filtering of the waste, the lymph is now cleaner. So the capacity of your immune system to fight against bacteria or viruses is stronger.

Pretty amazing system isn’t it?

Movement of lymph

So after explaining about the lymphatic system, you now understand that your white blood cells are fighting against bacteria and viruses. These white blood cells are part of the lymph.

One problem

There is only one issue….

This amazing system is only working when the lymph is moving. And lymph does not move by itself. Because lymph only moves by movement. So your body needs to move.

The secret of a good immunity system

So if only by moving your white blood cells can fight against bacteria. Then we can now say the secret of a good immune system is moving.

No motor

So why does lymph not move by itself? Well, when we take a look at the circulatory system, we see the heart. The heart that pumps the blood everywhere through our body. Within the lymphatic system, we don’t have this motor. In this lymphatic system, we don’t have a heart that pumps the lymph.

Breathe

The lymph only moves for example when you breathe. When you breathe in and out you move lymph. And when you walk. And when you move your arms, your legs you move lymph. In general terms, by movement, you improve the capacity of your immune system.

Or you will die

So now we know lymph needs to move because lymph needs to be filtered. Lymph also carries waste. And this waste needs to be filtered by the lymphatic nodes.

When lymph does not move, you get problems of retention of liquids. Some people get big arms or legs. You can easily get an infection. Actually, you will die when you don’t move.

Massage is movement

So again to improve your immune system, you need to move. So you can do sports or… you can get a massage treatment. Because massage is movement.

When we talk about movement and massage, we use the technique of Traditional Thai Massage. Within Traditional Thai Massage, both masseur and receiver are moving. We use stretches. Which is movement. And we use acupressure which is also movement. By receiving this kind of massage treatment, the massage therapist is stimulating the movement of your lymph. So your immunity system improves.

Massage when sick?

As massage improves your immune system, you need to get massaged to improve your immune system. However, when you already have a fever, have an infection, then you should avoid massage. The best thing is to rest until you are better.

Prevent illnesses

So just get a massage treatment to improve your immune system, to prevent to get sick. And when you have been sick, you are recovered and have no fever anymore. Then you can start to receive massage treatments again to improve your immune system again.

So we hope it is clear. This was our explanation about the secret of a better immune system. Movement! So why massage improves the immune system. And why you should get a regular massage to become healthier. Take care!

Create a healthy day,

Nicole & Manel

Today we like to explain to you why massage helps you to recover faster from injuries. Why is that?

Twisted ankle?

Well, let’s say I am twisting my ankle. What shall I do? I am walking somewhere, and I am turning my ankle. Is it right to get a massage right away?

The answer depends on the state of the tissue of the twisted ankle. If I have an inflammatory process, I cannot receive a massage.
But if I twist the ankle without breaking any ligament, or muscle tissue and there is no inflammation, then a massage will be beneficial.

Massage is beneficial

The massage will help to improve blood circulation towards the area that is over-stretched. Improvement of circulation to this area helps to recover faster from the injury.

Yes, but how does that work?

Connective tissue is the primary transportation system in our body. Blood and lymph are considered as connective tissue because both are made by cells. White and red blood cells produce blood. And we have the extracellular matrix; the plasma.

In blood, we find everything that the cell needs. The red blood cells provide Oxygen and nutrients with different particles. Onto the plasma of the blood, the Oxygen and nutrients go to the cells. They need this to make homeostasis, that will help to recover faster from an injury.

Improve blood circulation

So let’s say that with an improvement of circulation on the affected area, without any breaking of tissue, we are giving to the cells everything the cells need to create this type of recovery. So everything works better.

So if I twist my ankle, I should not get a massage when it is swollen. When it is thick, I should use cold therapy first. If I twist my ankle, I need to check first with my other ankle. If I turn my right ankle, I check with my left ankle. If both ankles are the same, I check with my observation; then I can get a massage.

Massage where?

But then, how does it work? Where do I get the massage? On the affected area?

Well, the answer lies in the fact that traditional Thai Medicine is based on the concept that everything in the body is connected. We can see this in the physiology of the human body.

Therefore when I twisted my ankle, without inflammation, I get a whole body massage. And of course on this treatment, let’s say a 1-hour therapy, it will be focussed mainly 20 to 30 minutes on the entire area of the leg of the twisted ankle. However, the other leg will be massaged too, plus the rest of the body including arms and hands. Traditional Thai therapy is based on massaging the whole body.

Swollen ankle?

Do you have a swollen ankle? Then wait until the inflammation is over and use cold therapy. For example, a cold balm to help to reduce the swelling. When it decreases, massage will still have a significant impact in recovering faster from the injury.

Just a side note: If I am not sure if the twisting is severe, I always go first to a doctor or physiotherapist. Before taking a massage.

How many?

So the question is, how many times do I have to get the massage?

Not every day. In Thai Therapy Massage we do it as follows: We usually give a one hour therapeutic massage when the customer comes for the first time. After three days, we will provide another therapeutic massage, only if the client still has pain. And if needed we will do the third therapeutic massage treatment seven days after the second massage treatment.

If there is still pain after these three treatments, we will start another three therapeutic massage treatments with the same schedule. We do this until the customer does not have pain anymore.

What injuries?

There has been scientific research about the benefits of massage with injuries. A hospital did one of the studies focused on knee injuries. Massage therapy treatment has shown a significant impact. The patients that got a massage recovered faster than those who were not treated by massage therapy.

By the way, this time we spoke about a twisted ankle, but of course we have many examples of injuries that people have when they come to get therapeutic massage treatments. Like frozen shoulder, arthritis, problems in the knee and many more. We have for example a lot of dancers that come with knee problems to us. Or yoga teachers with hamstring problems. And people who get injuries from work, sports or sitting too much.

In short

When you have an injury, and you have inflammation, you should not get massage directly. When you have an injury without inflammation, do receive a massage treatment so you can recover faster from the injury. So if you know anyone who likes to recover faster from his/her injury, recommend them a massage treatment.

Do you know that the biggest reason for our students to not start a massage course is money?

We get daily emails from people who love to study massage, but they email us that they don’t have money. So, therefore, I just thought to give you some inspirational ideas for you if you are like many of our students that have the same problem: They love to take a course, but they are struggling with the money.

So hereby some ideas:

  1. Are you unemployed?

In the Netherlands, we have the UWV, but maybe in your own country, you have another kind of organization. Sometimes it is the local community office, sometimes it is an office related to the tax office. It depends on the country. Ask your employment coach to fund your study. Explain your employment coach that you can work as a massage therapist after following the massage program, so you are no longer depended on unemployment funds.

  1. Are you employed?

Many of our students ask their bosses to pay their massage programs. Of course, it depends on where you work. But a lot of companies have money to pay their employees courses. Or maybe you want to change your career, even then a lot of companies have money to help you retrain for another profession.

  1. Crowdfunding!

We found this idea that a student had a couple of years ago, amazing. She wanted to do the Thai yoga massage level 1 course with us but did not have any money. She then emailed all her friends, family and colleagues to say that she wanted to do a massage course and that she had massage vouchers for sale. She basically told everyone: Normally a good massage treatment is about 60 to 75 euro for 1 hour. How about if you buy a massage voucher from me now, for only 20 euro and I will give you the massage after I finish my massage course.

Immediate clients after the course

It was so amazing, she got so much response that she was able to enroll in level 1 and also in the level 2 massage course directly without paying herself for the course. After the courses, she gave all the people that bought her voucher a massage and they loved it so much, many of them came back and paid the full price she asked. So she immediately had clients the day she finished the courses.

So how about this? If you have more ideas let us know. And if you need assistance, let us know as well, we are happy to help.

Have a lovely day and we are looking forward to seeing you in our class.

Create a healthy day!

Are you living in the Netherlands? Or planning to live in the Netherlands?

Then… this is for you!

The year 2019 is the last year in which you still can deduct your study costs for tax purposes.

This is for everyone, even if you don’t have a business yet.

Or if you are not yet registered at the tax office, you can still deduct your study costs and thus save money. If you are already a registered masseur, you can also still have this benefit.

What to do? You have to start in 2019

The only rule is, you have to start your study this year, in 2019!

So if you are thinking about taking a massage course, this would be the best time to start! So if you want to follow a study in 2020, you can probably do so in 2019 and thus bring start with the study earlier, with tax deductions.

No time?

Don’t you have time to start a course in 2020? You can consider starting a massage course anyway, even if you don’t have time.

Our courses are online as well, so you can enroll this year and start when the time is right for you.

For the Dutch tax office, it matters when you enroll. And that is… you must enroll in 2018 or 2019 in order to deduct the study costs for your taxes.

The massage courses at ITM Thai Hand Amsterdam are registered at the CRKBO (Register for Short Professional Education), so, therefore, acknowledged as a professional school where study costs can be deducted.

Are you an employee?

Are you working as an employee? You can also ask your employer/boss to pay for your massage study. Many of our students have done that.

Questions?

If you have any questions, please email us to info@thai-hand.com and we can help you from there!
